History
The history of the City of Wilmington spans more than eight centuries. The first people who settled where the city is now located were the Lenape who settled along the banks of the Brandywine River at least 800 years ago. Most historians believe they were introduced to European cultures in 1648 when a Swedish warship landed near their homes. The Lenapes lived in the Wilmington area until they were driven away during the late 17th century by a group of English settlers led by William Penn.
The demand for city homes increased after the American Revolution once European immigrants discovered the value of Wilmington's location near the Brandywine River and the Atlantic Ocean. Many of these immigrants converted city properties into thriving fisheries, flour mills and shipyards. Other immigrants developed during the early 19th century thriving gunpowder and railroad car manufacturing industries that played a key role in the city of Wilmington's economy for more than one hundred years.
Wilmington's population grew during the 20th century after many Fortune 500 companies discovered the value of Wilmington's business-friendly tax rates and diverse economy. This discovery continues to offer city home buyers many opportunities to build meaningful careers in the finance, insurance and healthcare industries.
Wilmington is a modern city that offers home buyers a thriving economy, access to many of the nation's largest transportation hub and beautiful cultural attractions.
